The problem with today's health care reform proposals
Article Abstract:
One of two basic healthcare reform plans may soon be implemented in the US, and both are deeply flawed. A government-controlled system such as Canada's would ostensibly save the US $100 billion in administrative costs. Unfortunately, this figure does not account for free or uncompensated medical services, and the resulting increase in services which would have to be rendered under the new system. Managed care programs, where employers are required to provide health insurance, would have lower start-up costs. Eventually, however, rising costs would be passed on in higher taxes.

Immune system problem linked to diabetes
Article Abstract:
University of Florida College of Medicine pathology research showed that the initiating event leading to onset of Type I diabetes may be uncontrollable multiplication of T-lmyphocytes when they come in contact with glutamate decarboxylase (GAD). Blood samples of 69 volunteers were exposed to the GAD enzyme. For diabetics in the group, 67% showed a lymphocyte response, but the blood of 14 healthy subjects showed no response. The study may lead to ways to identify and treat people at risk for developing insulin-dependent diabetes.

Study: Type A mothers' personality found in offspring
Article Abstract:
Researchers from Boston City Hospital, Boston University School of Medicine and Clemson University found that women with Type A personalities tend to have babies with similar traits. In a group 72 mothers and their infants, each mother was identified as Type A or Type B. The infants of the Type A women cried more during their first examinations and were described as more intense and less predictable at three months. Also, the Type A women were more likely than the Type B women to be breast-feeding their three-month-old infants.
