The psychological care of patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus
Article Abstract:
A multi-disciplinary health care team that includes a mental health professional may improve the treatment of people with insulin-dependent diabetes. Diabetics are prone to many psychological conditions because of the nature of their disease. Those in particular who have difficulty controlling their blood sugar have the highest risk of psychological problems. When first diagnosed, many children may be sad, apprehensive or angry. Their parents may experience guilt or anxiety also. Family problems soon after diagnosis are an indication that the child may have trouble maintaining normal glucose levels. The diagnosis of a complication of diabetes can also trouble adult diabetics. Group therapy and diabetes camps for children can lighten the burden and promote better adherence to treatment. Depression can occur in diabetics who have trouble controlling their blood sugar and some diabetics can develop eating disorders because they believe insulin will make them fat.

Disordered eating behavior and microvascular complications in young women with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus
Article Abstract:
Diabetic women who have eating disorders may have a higher risk of diabetic retinopathy. Retinopathy is a disease of the retina of the eye. Researchers followed 91 young women with type 1, or insulin-dependent, diabetes for up to five years. At the start of the study, 29% had an eating disorder which persisted in 18%. Fifteen percent of those with normal eating patterns had an eating disorder later on. Women with an eating disorder had a harder time controlling their blood sugar levels. Eighty-six percent of those with an eating disorder developed retinopathy compared to 24% of those with normal eating patterns.
