The relation between experience and outcome in heart transplantation
Article Abstract:
Heart transplant recipients may have a better outcome if they undergo the procedure at a medical center with more transplantation experience. A study examined the outcome of 1,123 patients who received a heart transplant at one of 56 medical centers between 1984 and 1986. Twenty percent of the patients who received one of the medical center's first five heart transplants died, compared with 12% of those who received a later transplant. Seven percent of patients who underwent transplantation at a new center with experienced cardiologists died, compared with 16% of those who underwent the procedure at a new center with inexperienced cardiologists. Experienced cardiologists were those who received training in heart transplantation from another medical center. A new transplantation policy should require that surgeons at medical centers which perform organ transplantations have previous experience.

Cardiac-allograft vasculopathy
Article Abstract:
A drug called everolimus may be effective in minimizing cardiac-allograft vasculopathy. This occurs when the arteries in a transplanted heart become narrower, a process that is not the same as atherosclerosis. This condition can cause the heart to fail and to be rejected by the immune system.

Viral triggers of cardiac-allograft dysfunction
Article Abstract:
A virus called adenovirus may be associated with organ rejection in children and adults who receive an organ transplant. Other viruses that may be associated with organ rejection include cytomegalovirus and human herpesvirus 6.
