The respiratory system: Part 4: breathing
Article Abstract:
Breathing is mechanically simple, but its control is complex. The respiratory control centre is situated in the medulla oblongata of the brain, which sets the rhythm of breathing and contains self-excitatory neurons that fire off in a cycle, maintaining the normal respiratory rate of 12 to 15 breaths a minute. A rise in carbon dioxide and the resultant fall in pH will increase the rate and depth of breathing as well as a fall in blood oxygen levels sends impulses to the medulla to increase the rate and depth of breathing.
