The role of ultrasound in the detection of pneumoperitoneum
Article Abstract:
Abdominal ultrasound can be a valuable alternative diagnostic technique in patients with symptoms indicating pneumoperitoneum secondary to visceral perforation, if results of standard x-rays are normal or equivocal. In half of patients with perforations of the large or small bowel and 30% of patients with perforated ulcers, pneumoperitoneum does not show up in x-rays. In such patients, ultrasonography can be essential for the diagnosis of abdominal visceral perforation.
