Sexual relations in a cold-weather shelter for homeless people
Article Abstract:
The data on the prevalence of risk behaviour amongst the young homeless population in the UK is limited. A study of youth homelessness found that the use of alcohol and illicit drugs strongly contributes to high risk behaviour. It assessed the varieties and prevalence of sexual and relationship difficulties encountered by shelter residents, based on direct contact with shelter residents and those recruited to work in the shelter. Generally a community mental health team working with the homeless is in a good position to intervene in problems, but priorities move more towards major mental health problems such as schizophrenia.

A health care revolution
Article Abstract:
Cuba has managed to meet health care targets set by the World Health Organisation despite severe economic problems caused by a blockade imposed by the US and the collapse of the USSR. Life expectancy is now 75 years, literacy levels stand at 99% and Cubans have high standards of housing, water purity, sewage disposal and public health, with hospital waiting lists almost unknown. These achievements are remarkable because there are shortages of basic health care equipment, spare parts and medicines.

Sexual revolution
Article Abstract:
Attitudes towards the sexuality of people with learning difficulties have moved on in the second half of the 20th century. Professionals now appreciate more fully the sexual needs of these people, and the benefits to them of an active sex life. People with learning difficulties should also have appropriate help from family planning services. The case history of one young woman illustrates the use of family planning services by someone with a mild to moderate learning disability.
