The threat of biological weapons: prophylaxis and mitigation of psychological and social consequences
Article Abstract:
An attack on a population using biological weapons may cause many psychological problems. Many people are naturally afraid of infectious organisms that they cannot see. The social disorder following a terrorist attack often causes psychological problems such as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression and survivor guilt. Other responses may include anger, panic, scapegoating, paranoia, demoralization and loss of faith in social institutions. Physicians should be prepared to deal with these psychosocial aspects of terrorist attacks.
