The weekender
Article Abstract:
Karlene Davis has been General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives since early 1997. She originates from Jamaica and, although her mother lives in London with Davis and her family, they try to return to the family home in Jamaica each year. Davis recalls the racism she faced whilst training as a nurse in Nottingham, England, but feels the experience strengthened her character. She comes from a family background with high expectations and appears to be a strongly motivated woman. She is proud of her award for outstanding achievement from the Gleaner newspaper.

A street with characters
Article Abstract:
Christine Hancock, RCN general secretary, lives in a four-story terraced house, a few minutes walk away from Camden High Street in north London. She likes the area because it is not a one-class ghetto like certain other parts of London. Her family lived in nearby Muswell Hill for a time, before moving to Southend. She prefers to live near central London and finds her street very friendly. She likes to use rail or plane for business trips and used to walk to work to keep fit, but now works out at the local gym.

It's tough at the bottom
Article Abstract:
Student nurses must learn to deal with a wide range of stress factors. They must face the emotional demands of dealing with patients, some of whom are terminally ill, and must also cope with academic pressure. They often have financial worries too, and feel isolated as they are forced to travel long distances to college sites or community placements. They often find that they are expected to do the same jobs as fully trained nurses when the go on the wards.
