Technology and statistics have given physicians an impressive ability to see into the patient's future. But advance knowledge of a patient's condition may not always be desirable. PSA screening, for example provides early warning of prostate cancer, but radical prostatectomy can have complications that raise the question of whether a patient should have the operation.

Physicians should take precautions against increasing their liability by avoiding some situations that may be more libellous than others. For example, statistics show that more malpractice cases occur from night, weekend or holiday patient care situations, so physicians should try to minimize practicing or avoid doing complex procedures during these times.
