Things change when doctor works for the company
Article Abstract:
Managed care is changing the face of healthcare; when combined with capitation arrangements for physicians, the changes are dangerous. Under capitation arrangements physicians only prosper if the company prospers and therefore must reorient their priorities towards the health of the plan rather than the health of the patient. Although patients are simultaneously turning into consumers who scrutinize health care services, doctors must try to maintain some scientific and moral independence in order to perpetuate quality care.

Troubles from 'if problem persists, contact physician.'
Article Abstract:
The US Food and Drug Administration has made several prescription medications available in over-the-counter form. Patients need to be better educated to know when to contact their physician if the problem still persists. Otherwise, the patient should be able to question his pharmacist or the physician's nurse. The abundance of lawsuits because of poor medical outcomes has made everyone concerned about appropriate care.

Patients, families need someone who cares
Article Abstract:
Interns may not have the experience and expertise of older physicians, but they care for the patient and communicate to help the family understand questions of critical care. Even preoccupied physicians should be aware of the concerns of the patient's family. Human sensitivity shared by doctor, patient and family makes the trying period of serious illness more bearable.
