'Any willing provider' laws are a key reform issue
Article Abstract:
'Any willing provider' laws are controversial statutes that would require managed care organizations to contract with any physician who will meet the terms of the contract. The laws allow patients a greater freedom of physician choice, but they reduce the bargaining power of managed care organizations to negotiate discounts with doctors. Several states, including Florida and Washington, have already enacted such laws. Physicians' groups have been neutral or divided on the issue, but now are coming out in support of the laws.

OMSS: how to help doctors survive hospital mergers
Article Abstract:
The Organized Medical Staff Section (OMSS) of the American Medical Association (AMA) warns that the trend towards hospital mergers poses threats to medical staff unity and physician autonomy. Physicians should be involved in all aspects of hospital planning, and they should have primary responsibility to resolve practitioner disputes related to mergers. A total of 223 hospitals were involved in mergers in the first quarter of 1996.
