Thomas R. Cech was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1989 for work with RNA molecules called ribozymes, and is the first practicing scientist appointed to the presidency of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He feels the institute will be best managed by permitting scientists to pursue broad-based approaches.

Parliamentary committee examines UK cancer research efforts

The British House of Commons has launched an inquiry into the state of cancer research in the UK. One stimulus has come from reports that UK cancer patients have lower survival rates than cancer patients in other countries.

UN acknowledges HIV/AIDS as a threat to world peace
Article Abstract:
AIDS is killing more people in Africa than any armed conflict. In 1998, AIDS killed over 2 million people, whereas only 200,000 died from violence. In sub-Saharan Africa, over 23 million people are infected with HIV.
