Thrombopoietin - clinically realized?
Article Abstract:
Thrombopoietin needs to be tested thoroughly before it is used in a clinical setting. Thrombopoietin was isolated and purified in 1994 after 30 years of research. It is also called c-Mpl ligand and megakaryocyte growth and development factor. It stimulates the production of platelets, which are involved in blood clotting. A 1997 study of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy showed that thrombopoietin reduced the severity of thrombocytopenia, which is a drop in platelet levels. Platelet levels also returned to normal more quickly in those patients who received thrombopoietin.

Expression of Bcl-x in erythroid precursors from patients with polycythemia vera
Article Abstract:
A protein which inhibits the death of red blood cells may contribute to polycythemia vera (PV), a disorder characterized by overproduction of blood cells. Researchers compared colonies of red blood cell precursors in patients with PV, patients with other blood disorders, and healthy volunteers. The precursor cells in patients with PV survived in the laboratory without erythropoietin, a hormone normally required for survival and maturation of red blood cells. The protein Bcl-x, which inhibits cell death, was much more common in PV precursor cells.

Impaired expression of the thrombopoietin receptor by platelets from patients with polycythemia vera
Article Abstract:
The blood platelets in patients with polycythemia vera (PV) may have impaired expression of growth factor receptors. PV is a disorder characterized by overproduction of blood cells. Platelets are blood cells important in blood clotting. Researchers examined platelets from 20 patients with PV, patients with other blood diseases, and healthy volunteers. Platelets and precursor cells from PV patients had substantially reduced or absent expression of platelet thrombopoietin receptors.
