Time & a bottle: the retirement years drive too many elderly to drink, posing a challenge for physicians
Article Abstract:
Alcoholism among the elderly is often difficult to diagnose for several reasons. For example, its symptoms, such as falling, confusion and incontinence, often imitate those of age-related disorders. In addition, physicians may be shocked that an older person has become alcoholic. A study at Johns Hopkins Hospital showed that only 37% of elderly alcoholics were correctly diagnosed; educated white women were most frequently misdiagnosed. However, late-onset alcoholism is often amenable to treatment, and techniques for diagnosing and treating older alcoholics are presented.

Headline hysteria
Article Abstract:
Patients are bombarded by a wide range of frequently contradictory health information published in the media. This information can cause them to overreact by avoiding treatments that they should be taking, sometimes because of a single negative study. Physicians should counter this problem by keeping up on press reports, educating their staff and publishing their own evaluations of new information. In addition, doctors can use the opportunity to offer preventative health advice to patients who are affected by particular studies.
