Time for nurses to find their voice
Article Abstract:
UK nurses should speak out about the type of service they are having to provide due to the crisis in the National Health Service (NHS). Nurses are having to compromise on the high standard of care they would like to provide. They are having to avoid some activities, including spending time with patients and fully addressing their problems, because the wards are understaffed and underequipped. Nurses should be seeking a public debate on the NHS. This would involve an examination of what it should provide and how it can be reformed and resourced to meet its targets.

A chance to make your mark
Article Abstract:
The NHS Executive has published a circular called 'A Consultation on the Strategy for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting' which offers health professionals the opportunity to say how they think the profession should develop. Nurses should seize this chance because they rarely get asked for their opinion on strategy. They must get their own copy of the circular, find out how their employer is going to collect people's ideas and discuss the relevant issues with colleagues.
