Modest ambition
Article Abstract:
Jean Gray is the prospective Liberal Party candidate for Torfaen, in South Wales, UK. Gray is a qualified nurse who worked as a midwife in 1979 and, most recently, was a community midwife in Newport, UK. Torfaen has strong Labour support but Gray hopes to challenge the Conservative party which received 20.28% of the votes at the last election, compared to the Liberal Democrats' 13.05%. Gray uses her knowledge of Health Service issues in her campaign strategy and recognises that Torfaen needs more investment in health and education.

Powers of judgement
Article Abstract:
The people who are elected onto the UKCC will use their experience to help protect the standards of the profession. Representatives will work in small committees and task forces to develop policies and they will also have to get involved in professional conduct cases which can lead to members being removed from the register. There is considerable responsibility attached to this type of work. The representatives need to be confident, good public speakers, be able to work in a team and able to grasp and debate complex issues.

Westminster, here we come: against the odds
Article Abstract:
The Conservative candidate for the constituency of Stoke-on-Trent, UK, is a nurse called Sheila Scott. The area traditionally votes for the Labour Party so Scott is resigned to not winning her seat. Scott runs her own homes for the elderly and, as the director of the National Care Homes Association, she is in favour of the private sector providing care for the elderly rather than relying on the National Health Service. Scott feels that her nursing background will be an advantage if she gets elected to Parliament.
