Time to grasp the nettle
Article Abstract:
Nurses, traditionally, have had little power and influence in policy-making, but this situation needs to change. The minimizing of the nursing contribution to policy decisions has been particularly evident in the UK health reforms of the 1980s and 1990s. However, global organizations, including the World Health Organization, have been strong in their support of the contribution of nursing towards health improvements. The nursing profession needs to rise to these challenges in collective action.

The future is yours
Article Abstract:
UK nurses must ensure that they take full advantage of the opportunities being created by significant changes in nursing and health care. They must play an active role in the creation of a new professional model, moving away from ideas of professional status based on exclusivity and authoritarianism. They must exploit their working knowledge of the principles on which collaboration, partnership and empowerment are based, and must ensure that they are able to explore their potential as healers.

Are nurses losing sight of the patient?
Article Abstract:
Two nurses debate the effect of nursing specialization on patient care. One nurse argues that specialization means that patients get the best care with someone who is an expert in their field. The other nurse argues that specialists ignore general care of the patient and do not see the patient as a whole person.
