Targetting rickettsia
Article Abstract:
Bacteria of the genus rickettsia causes life-threatening ricketsioses and a study by Martinez et al. identified a critical component of the first step, the protein on the host cell to which the rickettsia binds. Rickettsia species that are resistant to tetracyclines and chloramphenecol were obtained in the laboratory and would be easy to develop by genetic manipulation, and the new treatment tools could range from antibodies to OmpB, which are found effective in laboratory animals.

The biology of human sex differences
Article Abstract:
Differences between the sexes pervade all clinical experience in medicine, and the direct mechanisms of most phenomena involved in sexual dimorphism are not yet identified. But these mechanisms would be elucidated through study of systemic or local expressions of the fundamental differences between the sexes in the genetic and endocrine controls, and the biologic factors involved, but the socio-cultural environment can produce additional differences.

Exploring the uses of RNAi - Gene knockdown and the Nobel Prize
Article Abstract:
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for year 2006 was awarded to Andrew Fire and Craig Mello for their discovery of a new form of gene silencing sequence dubbed as RNA interference (RNAi). RNAi can be used to identify genes involved in drug resistance and one can also knock down genes in drug-sensitive cells in vitro, expose the cells to the drug and then observe, which cells survive and the genes necessary for drug sensitivity.
