Tip of the iceberg?
Article Abstract:
A pilot study has attempted to establish the incidence of sexual harassment of nurses. Over 70% of nurses and 45% nursing auxiliaries studied had experienced physical or verbal harassment. The most common responses were embarassment, anger and fear. Many experienced loss of self-esteem. Work often deteriorated. However, 76% of nurses had not reported the incident largely due to poor reporting procedures. Further action was rarely taken when complaints were made. The study has revealed a need for education to increase awareness and effective reporting and counselling procedures.

Counter-attack
Article Abstract:
Organisations should introduce training programmes to combat sexual harassment. Assertiveness training alone is inadequate. Induction courses for all staff should encompass the nature and unacceptibilty of sexual harassment. Specific training for nursing staff should cover reporting procedures, prevention and assertiveness training. Management training should raise awareness of the problem. Policies and procedures for dealing with harassment will indicate the problem is regarded seriously.

The tip of the iceberg?
Article Abstract:
A study of 40 residential and nursing homes carried out by Sue Brooks, studying for a masters degree in nursing studies, revealed a high level of cruelty and incompetence. In many of the homes the care of physically and mentally ill patients was left to untrained care assistants, and there was evidence that the drugs of one patient were being used for other patients.
