To their colleagues: heartfelt advice offered by family MDs
Article Abstract:
A family physician, David Barr, had many questions which he would have liked to ask his surgeon before he underwent cardiac bypass surgery, but he was not able to ask them because he didn't want to show his ignorance. This kind of problem seemed significant to him, because of the psychological stress it created. Dr. Barr gave a reassuring call to a fellow family physician, Thomas Stern, and answered his questions and let him know what to expect during his heart surgery. As a result of the good psychological impact this had on him Dr. Stern has started a service that answers questions that family physicians have concerning their own heart surgery. This service in called "Family Doctors' Heartline" and is proving beneficial for physicians seeking the service.
