Unhealthy habits should mean higher premiums, AMA says
Article Abstract:
James S. Todd, executive VP of the American Medical Assn, said at a news conference for the release of a national survey on health habits that people with unhealthy lifestyle habits should pay increased health insurance premiums. The survey indicated that 2/3 of American adults fail to exercise adequately and that only 51% of Americans avoided eating too much fat. Taylor also noted that many food products containing heavy salt, sugar and fat also achieved significant sales increases in 1992.

Genetic research spurs need to address ethical issues
Article Abstract:
Recent human genetic research, especially the Human Genome Initiative, is bringing up ethical questions because it uncovers sensitive health information. The Human Genome Initiative is a multibillion dollar effort to map all of the 50,000 to 100,000 human genes. Although this research will allow doctors to identify and perhaps treat genetic disorders, questions arise as to who should have access to this information and whether genetic health should influence the right to bear children.
