Tort reform bill goes to Congress
Article Abstract:
A Bipartisan coalition in the US House of Representatives introduced legislation for passing medical tort reform at the national level in the Congress in 2003, as doctors in several states in the US launched work slowdowns or other protests against increasing liability insurance rates. Physicians support the congressional measure that includes caps on noneconomic damage awards.

DIR latest to exit medical liability market?
Article Abstract:
Doctors Insurance Reciprocal (DIR), a risk retention group, was taken by the Tennessee Dept. of Commerce and Insurance in late January 2003 along with two other companies that insure hospitals and lawyers into state receivership. DIR has 1,189 claims open nationwide, totaling $81.2 million, even though its liquid assets are $5.2 million.
