Touch in the care of older patients
Article Abstract:
Nurses caring for elderly patients use non-necessary touch to personalize verbal communication. A study of 32 Finnish nurses, of all grades, looked at the amount of necessary and non-necessary touch performed on their patients in the context of daily care. During 184 nursing procedures non-necessary touch occured on 99 occasions, usually to the shoulders or the upper back. Non-necessary touch was carried out frequently by some nurses whilst others did not use it at all. Touch was often linked to a query or an observation by the nurse.

Tragic neglect
Article Abstract:
A nursing home matron describes the case of an 80-year-old woman who sought a place in her nursing home. The social workers responsible for caring for the woman seemed unable to take a proactive approach, and the woman was left to live alone with only one friend nearby. The matron offered to allow the woman to stay at the home free of charge until funding was arranged, but the woman committed suicide before she could be informed.
