Toxic shock syndrome after loop electrosurgical excision procedure
Article Abstract:
Toxic shock syndrome can occur after loop electrosurgical excision. A 30-year-old woman had a loop electrosurgical excision procedure. There were no complications during the surgery. The patient became nauseous 36 hours after the surgery, but thought that the discomfort was food-related. She developed a fever and diarrhea 48 hours after surgery. Both a general physical exam and a pelvic exam were normal, but high levels of white blood cells indicated the presence of infection. Vaginal and stool samples were cultured. The vaginal sample grew Staphylococcus aureus after 48 hours. The patient was seen at a hospital 72 hours after her surgery. She was lightheaded, feverish, nauseous and vomiting. She also had abdominal pain, cramping and diarrhea. A rash on her face and neck was noted and she was diagnosed with toxic shock syndrome. The patient was treated with intravenous ciprofloxacin and metronidazole. The patient was hospitalized for 36 hours and then prescribed oral ciprofloxacin for 14 days.
