Looking after Gemma
Article Abstract:
A care study of a baby with Edwards' Syndrome is presented. The baby was born with trisomy or chromosomal abnormalities following a normal pregnancy. A small jaw and mouth made feeding difficult. However, home care was possible. A naso-gastric tube was used for initial feeding although she gradually progressed to solid food and drinks. Few sufferers live beyond 12 months. The baby progressed well initially but died when she was about six months old. Nursing care largely involved support and encouragement for the family.
