Dofetilide for atrial fibrillation
Article Abstract:
Pfizer has developed an anti-arrhythmic drug called dofetilide for the treatment of atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. These are two types of arrhythmias that affect the upper chamber of the heart. Sold under the trade name Tikosyn, the drug blocks a specific potassium channel. It is about as effective as the anti-arrhythmic drug sotalol, but one of its side effects is a serious arrhythmia called torsades des pointes. For this reason, all patients who receive it should be on a heart monitor.
