House-Senate panel may do battle over physician-friendly Medicare provisions
Article Abstract:
A conference committee must reconcile differences in Medicare spending proposals by the House and Senate. Under discussion are provisions including limits on physicians' payments and malpractice liability, plus increases in patients' deductible fees. Also in contention are differences in payments to managed care compared with fee-for-service. Pres Clinton may veto the bill, which Republicans claim is needed to balance the budget in seven years.

Health plan battle: the next round
Article Abstract:
The ongoing political confrontation between Congress and President Clinton over health care reform involving Medicare and Medicaid threatens certain changes the American Medical Assn (AMA) would like to see implemented. The AMA is lobbying for legislative provisions on antitrust protection, lab standard exemptions and tort reforms. The Senate deleted these provisions from the House version of proposed legislation.
