Transgene expression in the rhesus cervix mediated by an adenovirus expressing beta-galactosidase
Article Abstract:
Gene therapy may be used to treat cervical cancer by undoing the effects of human papillomavirus (HPV) and of mutations of p53. HPV is known to be a risk factor for cervical cancer. Researchers either injected adenovirus or abraded the cervix and applied adenovirus to the cervices of 10 rhesus monkeys, animals which have similar characteristics to humans. The virus was administered to determine which method and which doses were most effective at infecting the animal. Monkeys which were injected with the highest dose of virus showed the greatest degree of infection. Abrasion of the cervix and application of virus to the abraded area was less infective. This information may be used in the future to assist researchers in injecting functioning genes into human cervical tumors.

Gestational age changes in circulating CD34+ hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells in fetal cord blood
Article Abstract:
Fetal blood has a high level of stem cells during the second trimester and these could be used in gene therapy to correct genetic disorders before the fetus is born. Researchers measured the number of stem cells, which are the precursors of all mature blood cells, in blood samples taken from 48 fetuses between the gestational ages of 17 and 41 weeks. Stem cell levels were higher early in the second trimester compared to term. The levels remained stable until week 28 and then began to drop.

Highly efficient gene transfer into preterm CD34+ hematopoietic progenitor cells
Article Abstract:
Researchers were able to insert a gene into a type of fetal blood cell called CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells. These cells are plentiful during the second trimester and then mature to form all fetal blood cells. For this reason, prenatal gene therapy could be used to correct some genetic disorders.
