Urinary red blood cell and cast excretion in normal and hypertensive human pregnancy
Article Abstract:
Values of fewer than 2,500 red blood cells per milliliter (ml) from samples of early-morning urine should be considered normal when testing for kidney function abnormalities in pregnant women. Urinalysis during pregnancy is beneficial in the diagnosis of kidney disease and of other diseases with kidney involvement and in monitoring the progress of known kidney conditions. Of 204 pregnant women, 174 had normal blood pressure, eight had chronic high blood pressure and 22 developed preeclampsia, which is a complication of pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure. Urinary red blood cell concentrations were measured twice during pregnancy, and 95% of the women with normal blood pressure had concentrations of 2,500 red blood cells/ml or less. Urinary concentration of red blood cells in the women with high blood pressure and in the women who later developed preeclampsia also fell within this range.

Unique epitopes of lactoferrin expressed in human cytotrophoblasts involved in immunologic reactions
Article Abstract:
Researchers found lactoferrin in human placentas in areas of inflammation. Lactoferrin is involved in the immune response, cell growth, and during times when one tissue such as the placenta invades another.
