Dental caries, restoration and tooth conditions in U.S. adults, 1988-1991: selected findings from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
Article Abstract:
More than 60 million adults in the US could potentially benefit from dental treatment, according to estimates taken from 1991-1994 results of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. In addition to caries problems in the general population, an estimated 135.6 million teeth or tooth spaces among adults could be professionally restored or treated. Such survey results can provide more details on the status of dental health and disease.

Caries prevention by CO2 laser treatment: dependency on the number of pulses used
Article Abstract:
Pulsed carbon dioxide (CO2) laser treatment can reduce the risk of dental cavities. The laser works by partially melting the tooth surface so the minerals will re-crystallize. Researchers tested two different wavelengths of CO2 laser on 120 extracted human molars at 1, 5, 25, or 100 pulses. The teeth were then exposed to acid to cause cavities. The pulsed laser inhibited cavity formation by up to 87% and the optimum number of pulses was less than 25.
