Treating multiple congenital epulides in a newborn
Article Abstract:
The rare case of a newborn with congenital epulides illustrate that this condition may occur in multiple sites. Epulides are tumors located on the gums which most often appear in singular form. The rate of epulides is nine times higher in females than in males. A two-day-old female born with masses on her upper and lower right gums was referred for dental care. An examination revealed two well-defined, moveable masses that were 0.5 and 0.7 centimeters in diameter. The masses did not interfere with the infant's ability to breathe or eat. The dentist diagnosed multiple congenital epulides and prepared for surgery. Under local anesthesia, surgeons successfully removed both masses and the wounds healed without complication. A laboratory examination of the removed tissues revealed two oval, firm, gray-colored, non-cancerous masses.

Surgically treating a benign cementoblastoma while retaining the involved tooth
Article Abstract:
Dentists may surgically remove benign cementoblastomas without extracting the affected teeth. Benign cementoblastomas are rare jaw tumors that develop in the tissues that produce teeth. A 16-year-old boy sought endodontic care for tenderness around his lower right first molar while chewing. A dentist had performed a root canal on this tooth six months earlier. The endodontist noted that the tooth was sensitive when tapped. X-rays revealed a small, circular lesion attached to the root of the lower right first molar. The endodontist diagnosed benign cementoblastoma and redid the original root canal. An oral surgeon removed the calcified tumor. The surgical site healed and the patient remained symptom-free at the one-year follow-up.
