OSHA develops pilot TB control guidelines; national standards for TB treatment could be next
Article Abstract:
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Region II has issued new guidelines requiring medical personnel who treat TB patients to wear specially constructed respirators. The region includes New York, NY, and Newark, NJ, which have the nation's highest rates of TB incidence. Health care workers complain of difficulty in breathing while wearing the heavy respirators. Researchers are making an effort to set standards for respirator design.

Offer treatment, not fear of prosecution
Article Abstract:
Mothers accused of delivering drugs to unborn children have been acquitted in the supreme courts of Connecticut and Florida. These addicts need medical treatment rather than punishment. If pregnant women did not fear prosecution, they would be more likely to seek treatment. To help ensure healthy mothers and infants, appropriating tax revenues for prenatal care should prove more successful than criminal sanctions.
