Trick or treatment

Article Abstract:

The Drug Crisis Centre in Glasgow, United Kingdom, treats around 600 drug abusers each week, most of whom would not be able to get treatment at a conventional health centre. Nurses in the centre are multiskilled and have to diagnose both physical and mental problems. Many of the patients are prostitutes so the clinic offers a well woman's clinic also. The staff do not expect to make patients drug free but are pleased if their basic health improves. There is a need to provide a service for drug users under the age of 16 because many youngsters are addicted by this age.

On-line midwives

Article Abstract:

Maternity units in Edinburgh, Scotland, have seen a fall in admissions since local midwives began participating in a Europe-wide scheme using telemedicine. With latest equipment, midwives are able to gain access to patient information from a central maternity hospital database, and can undertake cardiotocography (CTG) and blood-pressure monitoring in the patient's own home. In a further stage, midwives will train to provide ultrasound services.

Article Abstract:

The first 'right-to-die' patient in the U.K. was 53-year-old Janet Johnston of Scotland. Mrs. Johnston had been in a persistent vegetative state since she took a drug overdose in January 1992. In 1994, her family begin a legal application to allow her to die by withholding feeding. In May 1996, Mrs Johnston died peacefully. The 20 nurses who cared for Janet during her time in hospital discuss their experiences and their feelings about her care.
