Tried and tested
Article Abstract:
The introduction of primary nursing in an acute medical ward has enhanced patient care. However, organisational changes were necessary. Primary nursing teams have taken responsibility for patient care from admission to discharge. The development of care plans for recording patient condition and treatment has been central to patient care. Greater accountability of nurses has enanced morale. Nurses have developed confidence from closer liaison with colleagues. However, adequate preparation and regular valuation is essential to successful primary nursing.

Team spirit
Article Abstract:
Primary nursing differs from team nursing in individual responsibility for the organisation and quality of patient care. Primary nurses are accountable whereas no individual in a team is personally responsible. Primary nurses liaise directly with professional colleagues. Close nurse/patient relationships encourage effective communication and patient involvement in care. Primary nursing also facilitates continuity of care.
