Trouble with latex
Article Abstract:
The Infection Control Nurses' Association has issued the 'Glove Usage Guidelines' in which they state their plan to stop the supply and use of unsuitable rubber gloves. A number of nurses have devloped an allergy to latex gloves. Latex is a very good material for rubber gloves but when they are covered with cornstarch powder the allergens in the latex can be inhaled. Cornstarch was introduced to help with the putting on and taking off of the rubber gloves. Rubber gloves have been increasingly worn by medical staff to reduce the risk of blood-borne diseases.

Latex gloves: still a serious occupational hazard
Article Abstract:
A study of reactions to latex rubber amongst 575 nurses revealed that 20% had experienced a reaction and 2.5% had been definitely diagnosed. Reactions can vary from contact dermatitis to anaphylactic shock. Some employers do not recognize the seriousness of the problem and are refusing to stock more expensive gloves, however, they are compelled to provide less-reactive gloves under the European Union Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 1992, and the Disability Discrimination Act 1996. Employees can claim compensation if employers fail to comply.

Gloves: alternatives to latex
Article Abstract:
The increased use of latex gloves by medical staff as a precaution against infection has resulted in an increased incidence of allergic reactions to latex. Statistics of allergic reactions vary significantly, but there are two main types of reaction. The first is an allergy to the proteins in natural rubber and the second is sensitivity to the chemical additives in the latex.
