Tubo-ovarian Abscess in an Adolescent Virgin Female
Article Abstract:
A 15-year-old girl developed pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and a pelvic abscess due to habitual voiding of infected urine into her vagina. PID is frequently associated with sexually-transmitted infections. This patient was not sexually active, but had a recessed urethra and a history of bladder infections. Surgical exploration revealed an infected pelvic abscess resulting from inadvertent deposition of urine into the vagina, allowing the bladder-infecting bacteria to ascend the reproductive tract and infect the pelvic organs.
