Advances in detecting and responding to threats from bioterrorism and emerging infectious disease
Article Abstract:
Progress is made to strengthen local, state, national and international capacities to detect and respond to bioterrorism events and naturally occurring outbreaks of disease. New tools and systems are available to estimate the potential impact of the biological event and predict the resource needed for effective response and the potential uses and limitations of the approaches made.

'New variant' Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and bovine spongiform encephalopathy
Article Abstract:
A new form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), discovered in 1996, has been linked to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The strongest evidence for this hypothesis is that BSE and vCJD produced identical diseases in conventional and transgenic mice.
