Two Outbreaks of Multidrug-Resistant Salmonella Serotype Typhimurium DT104 Infections Linked to Raw-Milk Cheese in Northern California
Article Abstract:
Unpasteurized cheese was apparently responsible for two outbreaks of Salmonella serotype Typhimurium definitive type 104 (DT104) infection in Northern California in 1997. This strain of Salmonella is resistant to five antibiotics: ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulfonamides, and tetracycline. The first outbreak peaked in February, 1997 and the second in April, 1997. In both cases, they were traced to unpasteurized Mexican-style cheese. The Salmonella strain isolated from the cheese matched the stain found in many of the patients who got sick.

Farm Worker illness Following Exposure to Carbofuran and Other Pesticides-- Fresno County, California, 1998
Article Abstract:
Farm owners should post the proper notices and warn farm workers when toxic pesticides are used. On July 31, 1998, 34 farm workers began working in a cotton field in Fresno County, California, just two hours after it had been sprayed with the pesticide carbofuran. When this pesticide is used on cotton, workers must wait 48 hours before entering the field. The workers were not told this and no warning signs were posted. Several hours later, all the workers became ill. Carbofuran was detected in urine samples from many of the workers up to 11 days later.
