Two sides of emergency medicine: exciting, but stresses catch up with many doctors
Article Abstract:
The same aspects of emergency room medicine that are so attractive to medical students are what cause many middle-aged emergency specialists to want to leave the field. The excitement and variety of work that exhilarates the younger doctors simply wears down the older ones. More than 3,500 applications were received in 1992 for 838 residency opportunities in emergency medicine; at the same time, 12% of the respondents to a 1992 membership survey by the American College of Emergency Medicine replied that they intended to leave their specialty in the coming year.
