US biomedical research: Basic, translational, and clinical science
Article Abstract:
The strategies used by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to foster basic science, translational and clinical research goals for the 21st century are described. The NIH Roadmap constitutes an important vehicle for generating the transformation of translational clinical science and for novel interdisciplinary approaches that will advance science and enhance the health of the nation.

Research on women's health: Progress and opportunities
Article Abstract:
The concept of research on women's health, importance of sex/gender analyses in clinical research and priorities for women's health research are discussed. Distribution of evaluations published in peer-reviewed journals and the reporting of sex-differentiated statistics for these studies are very important to the rapid advancement of the state of the science of research on women's health and on sex/gender factors in health and disease.

Clinical research in the United States at a crossroads: proposal for a novel public-private partnership to establish a national clinical research enterprise
Article Abstract:
To leverage the enormous biomedical research gains made in the past century, a drastic need exists to reengineer this system into a coordinated and safe enterprise. The establishment of a unique public-private partnership termed the National Clinical Research Enterprise (NCRE) is proposed.
