Umbilical and placental vessels: modifications of their mechanical properties in preeclampsia
Article Abstract:
The development of preeclampsia during pregnancy may affect the mechanical properties of the arteries and veins of the umbilical cord. Preeclampsia is a condition occurring in late pregnancy that is characterized by high blood pressure, fluid collection and increased levels of protein in the urine. A study examined the responsiveness of umbilical and placental blood vessels from seven women who had had preeclampsia during their pregnancy and from 17 who had not had preeclampsia. Both the active and passive response to different substances was different in the blood vessels from women with preeclampsia than in those without. This difference may affect blood flow in preeclamptic pregnancies.

Extracellular matrix changes in the umbilical arteries of growth-restricted fetuses
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine whether the expression of extracellular matrix components is altered in the umbilical arteries from preterm fetal growth-restricted (FGR) pregnancies. The study concluded that increased mRNA expression of collagen I and III, but not collagen XIV or decorin, was found in the umbilical arteries of preterm FGR pregnancies.
