Umbilical flow distribution to the liver and the ductus venosus: an in vitro investigation of the fluid dynamic mechanisms in the fetal sheep
Article Abstract:
Fluid mechanics appear to play a significant role in how blood flow branches from the umbilical cord into the liver and onto the heart through the ductus venosus in sheep. Blood flow was evaluated at varying pressures and consistencies in six fetal liver samples with either the ductus venosus open or closed. Flow was more rapid at lower pressures with the ductus venosus open. Flow was slower with thicker or more viscous blood. At low pressures and high viscosity more blood flowed through the ductus venosus than into the liver.

Blood flow and the degree of shunting through the ductus venosus in the human fetus
Article Abstract:
The percentage of fetal blood shunted through the ductus venosus was 28% to 32% at 20 weeks, decreased to 22% at 25 weeks and 18% at 31 weeks, according to a study of 197 fetuses. In the fetus, the ductus venosus directs blood flow from the umbilical vein to the foramen ovale and into the left ventricle of the heart.

Amniotic gas values and acid-base status during acute maternal hyperoxemia and hypoxemia in the early fetal sheep
Article Abstract:
Low levels of oxygen in pregnant animals can change the levels of gases and the acid-base composition of amniotic fluid, according to a study in sheep. Excessive oxygen levels only change the oxygen concentration of the fluid.
