Update in gastroenterology
Article Abstract:
Major advances in the field of gastroenterology have been plentiful. Proton-pump inhibitors may control symptoms and maintain healing of irritations in the esophagus, but could cause complications in patients infected with Helicobacter pylori. This organism causes about 75% of ulcers, but can be eradicated with appropriate medication. Relatives of patients with benign colon polyps could be at higher risk for colorectal cancer. Clinical variables can help to guide the diagnosis of chronic diarrhea in AIDS patients. Investigation of the causes of surgical complications after the removal bile duct stones could help to avert these problems.

Update in gastroenterology
Article Abstract:
Proton-pump inhibitors appear to be more effective in treating gastroesophageal reflux than other drugs. Triple therapy with a proton-pump inhibitor and two antibiotics may be necessary to eradicate Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with peptic ulcers. Once the infection is eradicated, it seldom recurs. Escherichia coli O157:H7 was found to be an important cause of disease and human papillomavirus was linked to anal cancer. A test that accurately rules out pancreatitis was introduced, and an international symposium published a report on pancreatitis.
