Update in general internal medicine
Article Abstract:
Thirteen internists responded to the question, "What do you believe to be the most important studies or advances in medical care in 1996?" Their answers fell in the arenas of improvements in HIV treatment and increased knowledge of the optimal treatment of heart disease, hypertension, depression, and osteoporosis. They also pointed to studies showing that Papanicolaou smears after hysterectomy for reasons other than cancer were not useful, that screening for Chlamydia reduced the incidence of pelvic inflammatory disease, that appetite suppressant medications may cause heart disease, and that antioxidants do not appear to protect against cancer or cardiovascular disease.
