Update in infectious diseases
Article Abstract:
Many physicians still use antibiotics for viral illnesses that will probably resolve spontaneously. In 1998, the first case of avian influenza in humans was reported. Ribavirin combined with interferon alpha appears to be more effective in hepatitis C than interferon alpha alone. Antibiotics reduced the incidence of heart attacks in one study, indicating that coronary artery disease may be an infection. Triple therapy including protease inhibitors seems to be effective in combatting HIV infection. This treatment has lowered mortality rates substantially. Many physicians are concerned about the impact of biological weapons.
