Updated interim surveillance case definition for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) -- United States, April 29, 2003
Article Abstract:
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention presents its updated case definition for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). A case definition is a list of symptoms and positive test results a patient must have before he or she can be said to have a particular disease. For SARS, this includes fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome, travel to an area affected by SARS or close contact with a SARS patient, and a positive result from a SARS blood test.

HIV screening in health care settings: Public health and civil liberties in conflict?
Article Abstract:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued fresh guidelines for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which states that all individuals aged 13 to 64 years need to undergo HIV screening as part of routine medical care. This is a radical departure from the earlier guidelines by the CDC which had for decades adopted a 'rights' approach and recommended HIV testing only for persons at high risk or in health care settings with HIV prevalence.
