Ursodiol prophylaxis against hepatic complications of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
Article Abstract:
The drug ursodiol appears to be effective in preventing a severe liver disease called veno-occlusive disease in patients who receive a bone marrow transplant. It is not completely clear why these patients develop this disease but it could be a result of the chemotherapy they must take. Researchers randomly assigned 67 patients receiving a bone marrow transplant to receive ursodiol or a placebo before they received chemotherapy to prepare them for the transplant. Only 15% of those receiving ursodiol developed veno-occlusive disease compared to 40% of those taking a placebo.

Ursodiol is associated with fewer precancerous abnormalities of the colon in certain patients with ulcerative colitis
Article Abstract:
Patients with ulcerative colitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis who take the drug ursodiol appear to have a lower risk of developing colorectal cancer, according to a study of 59 patients. About half of all patients with these two medical conditions will develop colorectal cancer within 25 years.

Chemoprevention in ulcerative colitis: narrowing the gap between clinical practice and research
Article Abstract:
More research is needed to determine whether the drug ursodiol can prevent colorectal cancer in patients with ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammation of the colon, and patients with this condition have a higher risk of colorectal cancer.
