Violence and Threats of Violence Experienced by Public Health Field-Workers
Article Abstract:
Many public health workers are at risk of verbal or physical assaults perpetrated by their clients. A survey of 364 workers at sexually transmitted disease, AIDS and tuberculosis clinics in Texas found that 139 had experienced 611 verbal or physical assaults perpetrated by clients. Violent incidents included verbal or weapon threats, physical assaults and rape. Thirty-seven percent reported verbal threats, 12% reported weapon threats, 4% reported physical assaults and 1% reported rape. Five workers carried guns and/or knives while working.
