Vital signs
Article Abstract:
Testicular cancer mostly affects young men and research shows that its incidence is rising in some developed countries. It is not known why cancer of the testicles is becoming more common, but possible factors include sexual activity, orchitis and mumps. The two main testiclar tumours are seminomas and malignant teratomas. The most common are seminomas and the recovery rate for patients is good. It is important for young men to be encouraged to examine each testis on a regular basis and to seek prompt medical advice if any change is noticed.

Below the belt
Article Abstract:
Testicular cancer is likely to be treated by surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and evidence shows that treatment needs to be concentrated in cancer centres with specialist oncology staff to provide the best outcomes. Ongoing nursing care should give patients and their partners support in re-establishing sexual relationships, and further consequences of successful treatment is adjustment to a work routine.

Self-examination can help early detection, but may be a cause of embarrassment.
