Health experts recommend getting vitamins and minerals from food rather than from dietary supplements. Supplements may be needed by the elderly, by people on strict weight-loss diets and by smokers. There are few risks in taking a daily multiple vitamin supplement with no more than 100% of Daily Value.

Calcium: here's how to bone up on this essential mineral

The National Insitutes of Health has raised the minimum dietary requirement of calcium for adults to greater than 1,000 milligrams. The best sources of calcium are milk, tofu, yogurt, mozarella cheese, canned salmon with bones and supplements such as calcium carbonated and calcium phosphate.
